Match Summary
After 91 minutes of goalless football, the Gunners repeated their feat of last season with a last-minute winner at Burnley.
James Tarkowski was adjudged to have fouled Aaron Ramsey to allow Alexis Sanchez to fire Arsene Wenger's side into the top four at the expense of the Clarets.
Full Report
The build-up to the fixture saw both teams level on 22 points after 12 games played and with a chance of entering the top-four at Liverpool and Tottenham's expense after their draws this weekend.
However, with Arsenal it was a case of must-win for their aspirations as one of England's elite clubs, while the Clarets were simply enjoying their unexpected early-season form.
Three consecutive league wins from Sean Dyche's men saw them in high spirits but they were wary of the north Londoners, who are known for creating late drama against them.
The hosts made the brighter start with some attack-minded play as Johann Berg Gudmundsson caused all sorts of problems from the flank. The Iceland international winger saw a rasping drive early in the encounter tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Petr Cech, which was real signal of intent to end their poor record of one win in 13 against the Gunners.
Ramsey blasted a great chance over from point-blank range shortly after, wasting the good work from Alexandre Lacazette on the flank after the striker played the midfielder in with a great cross.
It resulted in an extended period of pressure from the visitors but just before the break, Burnley had a sighter on goal with cultured winger Robbie Brady nearly finding the top corner of Cech's net, but the veteran stopper did well to tip the ball over the bar.
That ended an entertaining but goalless first half. Arsenal upped the tempo in the second 45 minutes, throwing men forward but as was the case in the opening half, Tarkowski and defensive partner Ben Mee threw their bodies at anything the Gunners tried in and around the area.
The Clarets showed no signs of parking the bus though, and brought on club-record signing Chris Wood for midfielder Steven Defour to partner Ashley Barnes up front.
However, in the final minutes it was heart-break for Dyche and his players as referee Lee Mason pointed to the spot as Tarkowski was adjudged to have shoved Ramsey in the back.
Sanchez slotted the subsequent spot-kick to spark wild celebrations from the away supporters and put a slight dent into the Clarets' impressive campaign.
